Alexandrite

What is Alexandrite?

Alexandrite is a variety of the gem species chrysoberyl and an alternative birthstone for June. It is a hard and tough gem at Mohs' 8.5. Although chrysoberyl itself can produce lovely differing shades of yellowish-brown to green gemstones, it is well known and once extremely popular for its excellent cat's-eye, this beautiful chatoyancy usually seen best in greenish-yellow cloudy stones due to inclusions that also are responsible for the optical effects and sometimes referred to as cymophane.
