What is Citrine?

Citrine is the yellow to brown or golden-hued macrocrystalline quartz. It occurs naturally, but much of the citrine on the market today is produced by heating amethyst. Synthetic citrine is also made. Citrine is weakly dichroic and may show two shades of yellow, but often difficult to see especially in pale stones.

What’s in a name?

The name is derived from the French word citron (lemon) and given because of its resemblance to the colour of the fruit.

Natural citrine with a good even colour is relatively rare, but beautiful material is known from Russia, Madagascar and more notably Brazil.
