What is Coral?
Coral is the collective name for more than 7,000 species of marine creatures, but only about 10 species deserve the classification of precious coral by jewellers and gemmologists. These precious corals occur in different ecosystem than the endangered reef corals and are harvested in much deeper waters, below 50 metres.
Magnificent carvings are produced from Coral, here the gem material is Pleurocorallium elatius from Japan.
Coral as jewellery
Red Mediterranean coral in particular has a long history of jewellery use, with Asian species, for example the rare and popular Angel's Skin variety, being discovered only in the 1800s.
