What is Cubic Zirconia (CZ)?

Cubic zirconia is a man-made material that is transparent, hard, and ideally suited for use as a gem. It is best known in its colourless form and is often used as an alternative to diamond, but it can also be produced in a very wide variety of colours.

Diamond has many simulants, that is any natural or man-made material that may have the same general appearance as diamond but not the same physical, chemical or optical properties of diamond. Therefore, as gemmologists, our first step is to look for subtle clues to identify them. Colourless CZ looks very similar to diamond, but by using a 10x loupe and good lighting we can often see rounded facet edges, chips, bruises and grinding marks. Knowing what to look for and good experience is key.
