What are Pearls?
Pearls are among the earliest of gem materials to be used for adornment. Pearls form in certain types of shell, usually as a result of some sort of damage or trauma, or the intrusion of a foreign body. When this is caused by human intervention, the resultant pearl is termed a cultured pearl.
Today, most pearls seen on the market are produced with human intervention in special conditions from a variety of molluscs grown in pearl farms in various parts of the world both in marine and freshwater reservoirs. This is called a culturing process, therefore their trade name cultured pearls.
