What is Rock Crystal?
Rock crystal is the transparent, colourless variety of quartz and was often used as an imitation of diamonds in the past. Today rock crystal with inclusions of other minerals such as needle like inclusions of tourmaline or golden coloured rutile are popular and can be very attractive.
In ancient times rock crystal was thought to be ice that had so thoroughly frozen that it stayed solid even at high temperatures, the word crystal coming from the Greek word for ice. Rock crystal often occurs in beautifully shaped transparent crystals, which may be of huge sizes; some crystals can be metres long!
