Spinel is one of the most popular of gems. It could be argued that spinel was an under appreciated gemstone, with ruby being the most desired of all red gemstones, but its generally lower price and the quality and colour of relatively recent new finds have raised its popularity.

Red spinels have been known since antiquity and some stones have important historical interest. However, it also occurs in several other colours, notably blue and pastel shades, and over the last decade spinel has seen a resurgence in popularity with grey and lilac colours being popular with high market appreciation. Spinel is a tough and lustrous gem with good durability and stability. Spinel has recently become an alternative birthstone for August.
