What is Tanzanite?
The beautiful blue to violet gemstone tanzanite is a variety of a mineral called zoisite. Tanzanite is a modern gemstone as it was first discovered in 1967 in Tanzania, Africa. To this date, it has not been found anywhere else in the world.
Older than dinosaurs?
Incredibly, scientists have been able to ascertain the age that Tanzanite crystals grew and, using sophisticated techniques, have shown that the crystals from which the gems have been cut crystallised approximately 600 million years ago, older than the dinosaurs!
