What is Tourmaline?

Tourmaline occurs in a wide range of colours and it is often remarked that it shows the greatest colour range of any gemstone. Most deeply coloured tourmalines will also show distinct pleochroism, for example, red tourmaline may show a deep red and pink, and most green will show different shades of green.

A multicoloured marvel

Tourmaline is often found as spectacular crystals; some can be multicoloured with different colours at either end of the crystal, or forming colour zoned cores and rims.

Cutting sometimes takes advantage of this and produces bi-coloured gems, known as 'parti-coloured' and 'watermelon' tourmaline.
