What is Zircon?

Zircon is a natural gemstone that occurs in many colours and also shows exceptional brightness and lustre. Indeed, the lustre is sub-adamantine, almost comparable to that of diamond and in the past some colourless stones were used to imitate diamond itself. Zircon is another birthstone for December.

Durability and care

Zircon is a gemstone that is susceptible to brittle fractures, and the edges of facets are easily damaged. Take care not to let loose stones rub together, or stones in jewellery allowed to rub against others. Because of this, also avoid wearing zircon during any activity that can cause abrasion or knocks and avoid heat or bright sunlight as the colour can sometimes change.
At the end of the 19th century most zircons known were green or reddish-brown stones, but today many stones are bright blue in colour due to heat treatment of brownish zircon.
